Since May 8, 2022, the City Hall Annex in New Bern has been under construction. City officials anticipate that construction will hopefully conclude around the first of July.
“The goal is to open the new annex and have a ribbon cutting first of July,” said New Bern City Manager, Foster Hughes.
The crew is working on adding final touches of the annex to include finishing the terrazzo floor, placing final sheet rock, and applying decorative wainscoting.
There have been some issues with ordering materials and supplies for the project, according to Hughes.
“I think our biggest hold up has been an electrical panel bow and a breaker for the elevator,” he said.
The contractors are waiting for these parts to come in, which are estimated to arrive come mid June. Once the final materials arrive, the crew will be able to finish the job.
For years now, citizens of New Bern advocated to make the building more accessible to those with disabilities.
In October 2020, the Board of Aldermen approved funding for the $4.3 million project which will allow access to the first and second floors of City Hall.
$3.9 million of the cost was financed and the remaining $476,709 was transferred from the city’s general fund to make up the difference.
Once the project is complete, citizens will have accessibility access through an improved entry off the main level, and accessible restrooms on each floor.
